Developer Comments
This game was absolutely amazing to develop. I had so much fun working on it!
However, truth be told, I was against this jam in the first place. I am one of the users who love AI. Not for artwork, but I use it for translation, voices, stories and such. If you have played any other of my games before you know I love the AI voices. When the poll came out asking if AI should be allowed, I ticked yes and it appeared that most people did. The rules came out and said "Use AI" then apparently some backlash and it was removed then it was changed :(
But this idea came to light and I just couldn't give up the opportunity to try some new things out. Legend of Zelda but the reversed roles and you play Zelda. It sounded awesome. So many ideas went through my head Mario and Peach, WW2 but this just felt the most right.
I do hope you like it! It was so much fun to develop.
What I did well
- Last time I didn't like the theme but I forced myself to do it. This time, the theme was awesome! I had so much fun rather than being forced motivationally.
- I jumped into so many new things, magic powers, world-building, ALS, level blocking, C++, Niagara its hard to not have enjoyed myself as a nerd!
- The game was challenging but fun at the same time. I had a lot of fun!
- I managed to add a cutscene! It's only basic but it works with the Unreals Cine rail system.
- I got a bunch of voice actors used!
- I love the character talking to herself
What I would do better next time
- Have MORE voice actors. More voice actors would have meant even more variation
New things I've learned
- The Advanced Locomotion System (ALS) community system. Super easy and adaptable game-ready animations and players. It's really good! A bit buggy when retargeting and apparently the most common way to do it is to render two characters and one invisible. Seems odd but it's quick at least
- Niagara particle system - Not in depth but I've started touching it more and more. Editing values, changing parameters. Its fun!
- Unreal C++ - I didn't specifically code anything, but the ALS system is built in C++ so several times I opened it up and read a bunch of C++ to figure out how things worked and what to use. Saved my bacon several times!
Known bugs
- Low FPS means you fall through the floor! Something to do with ALS
- Some dialogue cuts off the audio
- The magic bolt projectile isn't centered
